How to Choose a Wedding Videographer

Let's start out by dismissing a potential pre-conceived notion about this blog post - because I can see where people might already be saying "wait, a wedding video business posting about how to choose a wedding videographer?" I can tell you upfront that finding someone you work well with takes time, and not everyone is a perfect match for you. That's why we've created the list below to help support you on your journey to finding your wedding videographer.

My hope for you is that after reading through this list you will come away more confident about your decision and excited to find someone to film your special day. Below is my not-so-comprehensive list of points to consider before choosing a wedding videographer.

  1. Filming Style. Bright and fun, edgy and moody, uses audio clips, prefers to lay over with music - these are all different preferences and styles that a videographer may portray in their videos. What's the best way to tell if your vision matches their style? Check out their videos. If you watch 2-3 of their videos and LOVE how they shoot and edit it could be a match made in heaven.
  2. Personality.  They might be insta-famous, but how do they act during a coffee meet up? Choosing someone you mesh well with can determine whether you will slide through your wedding day with ease or be more stressed than a Starbucks barista on national coffee day. Working with your videographer is a multi-month process, so focus on picking someone who relieves stress and supports your vision and beliefs.
  3. Communication. How long did it take them to get back to you after you sent them an initial email? Does it take a Batman signal in the sky in order to get them to meet you somewhere? If you are having problems communicating with videographer before they even make it to your wedding day then the day of collaboration and your video delivery could go the same way. Find someone who is thrilled to hear from you and will go the extra mile to make sure your voice is heard.
  4. Trust. You will be around your videographer for the better part of your wedding day. Choosing someone who you can trust and will treat you with respect throughout the day is so important. You could hire Stephen Spielberg to make you the wedding film of a lifetime, but would he be willing to get you a glass of water after you kill it on the dance floor? Find someone who is not only good at shooting video, but will also go the extra mile to serve you and your spouse to be.
  5. Packages and Pricing. Finding the balance between budget and package options can be tricky. My advice for you? Think about what aspects of your video is most important to you. If having your entire ceremony recorded is non-negotiable, then take that into account. Most businesses will have a list of options or add-ons to look through associated with their prices, so find what works with your budget and don't be afraid to ask questions.

We tell couples all the time that your wedding film is something you will get to experience for the rest of your lives. The motto for our business is "Seeking Jesus + Filming Weddings" because there is purpose in everything we do, whether it is getting coffee to discuss your vision or editing a clip of your first dance. I hope this list was helpful to your search, and feel free to watch one of our videos below to see more of who we are as videographers.
